About these free GDD templates
A game design document keeps designers, programmers and artists building the same game. These templates, written by the White Cube Studios team from real Unreal Engine, Unity and Godot productions, give you a ready structure for the pitch, core loop, mechanics, level flow, economy and technical scope, so you can start documenting in minutes instead of designing a format from scratch. Pick a template above, adapt it to your project, and share it with your team.
Need help turning a document into a playable build? See our game and level design services, browse the level design process, or talk to us about your project.
What a good GDD contains
- Pitch and pillars: the one-paragraph idea and the three things the game must never lose.
- Core loop and mechanics: what the player does every minute, with inputs, rules and feedback.
- Level and content plan: spaces, progression and pacing, so level design and art can start in parallel.
- Systems and economy: progression, rewards and balancing numbers that engineers can implement directly.
- Technical scope: target platforms, engine choice, performance budgets and tools.
